Contestant Sings 'Hero' on American Idol 5 // 2:08 PM EST Updated by Liron

Heather Cox, one of the 10 female finalists on the 5th season of "American Idol" sang Mariah's "Hero" on last night's show.

The comments made after Heather's performance, both from the show's judges and the media show how respected Mariah is as a vocalist and how difficult it is to try to sing her songs:

Paula Abdul: Here's the one big problem: Sorry, but when you sing songs that the great Mariah Carey sings, you run the hugest risk of being compared to icons. And right now, there's no one hotter than Mariah Carey and we're constantly reminded of how brilliant her voice is. It's a big, big, huge risk to take on a song like that. You did a good job but it wasn't great.

Randy Jackson: They hate when I say this, but it's hard for me because I work with Mariah... Paula's absolutely correct, when you choose stylized songs by these kinds of singers, you're gonna pale in comparison because this was their own soul, own heart, own thing so... song choice, song choice, song choice tonight.

Simon Cowell: This is going to sound odd but Paula and Randy actually spoke some sense. The problem is it was kind of like, you know those ghastly pageants when just before the finalists have arrived, somebody gets up to sing, you know, a Mariah song or something, and it's a horrible moment and it did come over a bit like that, it's sort of pointless really. Pointless if you're not gonna be as good as the original, unless you're gonna do something different with the song.

Foxes on Idol:
Tyler: I've always wanted to hear this song on the show, but I also wanted to hear it done well. If "well" is synonymous with "flat," Heather succeeded.

Curlio.com:
American Idol stalker Heather Cox decided to be brave and perform a song that has never been done on American Idol, "Hero" by Mariah Carey. Doing a Mariah song is risky, but Heather wasn't as bad as she could have been. She was pretty good actually, just not great. Paula said she improved, but picking Mariah is just a bad choice. Randy said that most everyone pales in comparison to Mariah. Simon agreed with Paula and Randy, comparing it to a beauty pageant performance.

The Post Chronicle:
Next up was Heather Cox, who sang Hero by Mariah Carey. After her horrible performance last week, the very idea of her attempting Mariah made me cringe. Unfortunately, her singing did as well. This girl just does not have a voice. How did she even get into the top 12? Granted, she did give a better performance than last week, but the bar was set amazingly low. I was quite surprised that she didn't belt the sections of the songs that were written for belting. Very amateurish.

PhillyBurbs.com:
Heather Cox seems truly lost on the Idol stage. She set herself up for comparisons to Mariah Carey with a ridiculous version of the hit, "Hero" and then looked like she might die after hearing Simon's comment that her performance was "pointless." Heather would have been better off turning in her resignation on the spot than to suffer what is her almost certain fate – getting kicked off the show this week.

TV Fodder:
Heather Cox made a fatal flaw in my book: She performed Mariah Carey. It's a bit overdone and made me feel like I was at a wedding -- without an open bar.

Blogcritics.org:
Heather Cox decided to attempt the impossible and took on a Mariah Carey song, namely "Hero". She held her own I thought, weakly but she held it. The big problem, she is not Mariah Carey, has no where near that kind of voice and so she couldn't possibly live up to the original. Gutsy song selection but it may also be a fatal one for her.

The Watercooler - TVGuide.com:
Heather, there is a reason nobody has performed Mariah Carey's "Hero" on American Idol. The woman's voice goes from gutter growl to dog whistle at the speed of light; nobody can do what Mimi does. Nice gratuitous name-dropping by the way, Randy Jackson. I'd love to see him try to tell Mariah she sounded "pitchy."

MARIAH CAREY: 'The Queen of Pop'
By Christopher Hamilton

2005 was the year of Mariah Carey. On December 31, 2004, if anyone had written the previous statement, they would have been ridiculed. Mariah had been placed in the "career over" section of the music industry alongside the likes of Whitney, Bobby and Lauryn Hill. How she got there and how she overcame that stigma is the real story.

The music world is one of young, hot and upcoming artists. It's hard to get on top and it's even harder to stay there. Every year there is a new artist that rises out of the woodwork. Back in 1990, that artist was Mariah Carey.

Through her work as a background vocalist, Mariah's music came in contact with Sony head Tommy Motolla (remember him?), who promptly signed her to Columbia Records. Her very first single, "Vision of Love," shot to the top of the charts and multiple number one songs would follow. Mariah owned the 1990s.

During this time, Motolla married his protege. Is it even ethical for a record head to have a romantic relationship with one of his artists? (Berry Gordy and Diana Ross' relationship ultimately broke up the biggest female group ever, The Supremes). The eventual end of Mariah's marriage to Motolla (which was displayed in her "We Belong Together video) was the beginning of a strange and peculiar downward spiral for Mariah.

Once Mariah left Motolla and Sony for Virgin Records for a record $80 million contract, the attack was on. It's been reported that Motolla took songs intended for Carey's first release on Virgin and gave them to Jennifer "I'm Real" Lopez. Whether it's true or not is the subject of much debate; however, record companies have been known to do whatever it takes to artists they know are leaving their label.

Leading up to the release of her first movie, Mariah began to act irratically. Combined business and personal matters began to take their toll and Mariah took a "break" in the middle of the massive promotion for the debut of her movie and new Virgin CD. With no Mariah to promote them, both projects failed and the doubters began to write Mariah as a lost cause.

Virgin even got in on the act, quickly buying her contract out by giving Mariah $28 million just to leave their label. Although she made out in the deal, it's considered a public relations disaster to be paid to leave your record company to "cut their losses." Critics had a field day with the downfall of Mariah Carey. Was it because she could no longer sing or that she was close to breaking records of the highly acclaimed Elvis and the Beatles?

Now a free agent, Mariah was signed to Def Jam by new head LA Reid (the mastermind behind the chart success of Usher and OutKast). Even though her first release on Def Jam, "Charmbracelet" eventually went platinum, it was widely considered that Mariah's days as a top selling artist were long gone.

To prepare for her second release on Def Jam, Mariah took her time and went to the islands to regroup. After clearing her head of all the pressures of life, she hooked up with her old producer/friend Jermaine Dupri and created "The Emancipation of Mimi." (Mimi is the name Mariah is called by her close friends).

A ultra smash, "Mimi" walked down 50 Cent's "The Massacre" to become the number one selling cd of 2005 by selling over 5 million copies and counting. (At press time, "Mimi" is still firmly lodged in the top ten.) Even more impressively, she scored 2 more number one songs from the CD, giving her a total of 17. Now she is tied with Elvis Presley for the most number one songs of all time behind only the Beatles with 20. Does anyone think Virgin jumped the gun?

In other words, Mariah Carey is walking ground no other woman has ever achieved. She's had more number ones than Whitney, Janet Jackson and Madonna. She has earned the official title of "The Queen of Pop." More importantly, she's approaching the holy grail of the Beatles. Does anyone doubt she won't get there?

Mariah vs. J. Lo: Whose team are you on?For most of this millennium, Jennifer Lopez (at right) had the upper hand in her eternal rivalry with fellow Tommy Mottola-groomed diva Mariah Carey (at left). That ended this year when Carey finally emerged from her post-Glitter slump with The Emancipation of Mimi, which sold 4.1 million copies, about six times as many as J. Lo's March release Rebirth. (Mimi also earned Carey eight Grammy nods this morning, while Lopez didn't earn any.) In fact, Carey's album is the No. 2-selling CD of the year to date, surpassed only by 50 Cent's The Massacre (4.8 million sold). Such are the details revealed in a music winners-and-losers article by Michael Endelman and Raymond Fiore in the forthcoming issue of EW.

So it's time; pick a side -- whose team are you on?

Comments
First, I do want to give J.LO her props, she's beautiful, can really dance, has great style, and is a great actor...but she's NO Mariah Carey. I respect talent and beauty when I see it, I'm not a hater...but when compared to Ms. Mariah there is no comparison. THey are on totally different levels. Musically, no matter what J.LO does she will never be up to Mariah's level. That's just the truth and I'm sure she knows it.

Isabel Reynolds | Dec 20, 2005 6:45:47 PM

Mariah is the one and only...

And btw is her name j.lo? i thought it was j.hoe! :P oh im bad

Daniel | Dec 20, 2005 6:35:48 PM

there's no comparison between mariah n j lo,definately mariah is d best.To me mariah is talented, beautiful, got great voice, dedicated to her music that shows in all the songs she wrote and i can see that mariah is sincere to her fans coz it shows and thats y i'm 1 of her biggest fan since her debut till now i never stop being her fan and i may sound a bit crazy but my wish is that 1 day i get 2 meet her in person eventhough i know it's impossible.Hey mariah, i wish u all the success which u deserve 4 your hard work all these years.

riaaz | Dec 20, 2005 1:28:31 PM

Mariah of course, J lo can't sing.... She's suck she can only dance. She dun have talented.....
But
Mariah is better she got good voice and she also can dance..

J.Lo Can't beat Mariah....
I can tell J.Ho suck...
Oh and another thing
Mariah is beautiful and sexy..

Gift | Dec 20, 2005 12:43:08 PM

You can't compare Mariah to Jlo.Mariah is better!!!I'm on her side and will always be on her side

Gifted | Dec 20, 2005 12:24:03 PM

Mariah of course! This is like comparing bronze to platinum and you know Mariah is the platinum.Mariah is prettier, more talented and a genuinely down to earth person behind the hype. She really puts her heart and soul into what she does. Who is Jlo????

Emily | Dec 20, 2005 8:18:14 AM

Mariah Carey over Jennifer Lopez, any day!
Jennifer cannot sing, she does not take any part in the making of any of her music, whereas Mariah writes and produces all of her own, Mariah has a five octave range, Jennifer has an average two octaves, Mariah has been around for fifteen years, Jennifer has been "singing" for six, I don't know where the rivalry is. They're not even in the same league...

Ozzy | Dec 20, 2005 4:36:56 AM

Mariah is everything jLO is not and never could be. Lopez has her time in the sun w/ her behind, but her time has passed. Mariah is classic.

Sheila Rosa | Dec 20, 2005 2:33:03 AM

how can u compare Mariah with J lo. Mariah is an artist, she writes all her songs, produces them, directs some videos, she does it all. J lo just shows up to the recording studio and sings what they give her. Mariah can perform live too, j lo cant sing.

pete | Dec 19, 2005 10:33:22 PM

mariahhhhh...cos she's on ffiiirreeee!!!

j.lo y dont u just go and steal another song from Usher, or hey, youve stolen from MC before.. maybe u should try that again? seems itll be the only way u can get a hit... oh wait, im sorry you didnt steal the beats.. you're producers did. i apologise for actually thinkin you had anything to do with the music "you" "make".

i love MC - the new albums a killa. congrats MC!

jessica | Dec 19, 2005 10:30:27 PM

This is ridiculous... JBlow isn't talented enough to sing in the shower and Mariah is a one of a kind talent

Shaun | Dec 19, 2005 8:53:16 PM

Mariah also got "Dance Artist Of The Year" in 1996 of National Dance Music Awards.
Mariah forever!!!
But who's J.Lo anyway?

Minh | Dec 19, 2005 8:38:58 PM

This is like comparing plain water with champagne. MC is definitely HOT TAMALE....

MC Hot Tamale | Dec 19, 2005 8:02:04 PM

OMG that is a STUPID question obviously *Mariah is the better choice.. She sold more album's, has a better voice and her career is on track!! This is not really a fair question though, it should be someone more @ Mariah's level of singing, even though know one compares.. But J.Lo is a great actress I give her that much, but lately it seems like everythings going down hill for her.. Mariah's been around since the 90's and is still a stronger force in music.. I'm so happy to see her back on top where she belongs and can's wait to see what she has in store for the future.. We love you Mimi keep up the good work & take care of yourself...

Love Always.. Mariah's Biggest Fan...

Mariah!!! The fact that people even consider j,lo soft weak voice is beyond me? Also people even consider madonna as up there...... yes an entertainer but a great singer? have you heard the new album? It might as well be cher!!!
j,lo is a fab actress, she should stick with that.
Mariah as an actress? .... well glitter was poor, but wise girls was pretty good.
As for singing? Mariah is totally on fire baby!!!
Mariah for ever!

john cheeseman | Dec 19, 2005 4:55:36 PM

Why is it even a question? no matter what mariah wins, she's the best

Alex | Dec 19, 2005 4:34:54 PM

J-LO CAN'T COMPETE WITH MARIAH CAREY!!!!!!

There is no comparison between the no. 1 selling female artist of all time and J-Lo. Mariah is a better singer, writes better songs, has been doing this thing called the music business for more than 15 years, and is not just a product, but a true aritst with real vocal talents. J-Lo just cannot compare to that.

Aaron | Dec 19, 2005 4:14:07 PM

Not even sure why anyone wished to compare the two in the first place. But I'll play along and give my views anyway......

Mariah has always had and always will have the greatest vocal talent of them all. Whether you like her musical style or not, there's no denying her vocal abilities. She writes her own music and is dynamite singing live. Those who claim that she can't sing live anymore (or never could), are flat out wrong. I saw her perform on Good Morning America (I was there) in April when her latest album came out. She did 5 songs and held every note perfectly.

Sure, she doesn't have a clothing line, a perfume line, or other business. That's because she chooses to focus on what she does best: sing. There are some who want it all - Mariah's just happy to be singing and creating music. It's not about making money for her....and she's grateful for her success.

For those who can come up with nothing better than nose jobs and boob jobs and butt jobs as a reason for choosing one over the other..... Accusations involving plastic surgery have no place here. It has nothing to do with abilities. And we'll probably never know anyways.

The queen of music is and will always be Mariah. On talent alone, she trumps them all. When it comes to beauy (both inside and out), there's no comparison.

I own her live concert in Puerto Rico and it is an amazing show... just like the Las Vegas ones... with lots of light and movement.. but no vocals at all.... completely different from Mariah Carey around the world... in wich she pours her heart out... and doesn't even look like she is trying very hard....

now ... that is a true diva singer!!!

MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH MARIAH

Denia Terra | Dec 19, 2005 2:49:19 PM

EW you are truly stupid for comparing Mariah the QUEEN OF POP to that pendeja J.HO. I am gonna say it again, EW you are truly stupid for bringing up this question. Please don't ever compare Mariah to a talentless pendeja like J.HO.

Thank you.

Okay, seriously, i am a mariah carey fan for over 12 years now and there had never been a time for me to even believe in people 'singing' like j-lo. I have nothing against her, i believe she can make a great movie because she is gifted to do that but sing? hey come ON...i have NEVER heard j-lo sing any note, not even live, the only thing she has on her side with singing is that she dances...
but hey, respect to all...let everybody be good in his or her ways. but i love mariah so my vote goes out to her! XXX from Holland

anita | Dec 19, 2005 2:15:17 PM

MARIAH IS THE BEST SINGER, JUST TRY TO IMAGINE J.LO SINGING "LEAD THE WAY"... THERE'S NO COMPARISON.

Tony | Dec 19, 2005 12:43:26 PM

MARIAH THE REAL DIVA
J.LO IS MAID .....

HERU | Dec 19, 2005 11:28:10 AM

mariah in every way

lynn | Dec 19, 2005 11:08:19 AM

C'Mon? JLo vs Mariah?
They're not even on the same level!
Mariah is true artist in 'music' industry. She write, sings and produce her own material. She influences many recent artist such Christina Aquilera among others. And her vocal ability...nobody can go top of it. Nobody can imitate it! And the most important thing: SHE IS THE BEST SELLING FEMALE ARTIST OF ALL TIME!!!!
JLo........she's talented too in the 'dance' category. And probably 'acting' too. But she just a beginner! Who's young artist influenced by JLo so far? She's just an average artist! Can you compare her to other big female movies actrees? Of course no!
But she has such a big name I admit. And it's because of the publicity. Not based on what she's achieved.
So, I pick Mariah!!! Because she's the best!!!!!!!!!!

Nate | Dec 19, 2005 10:34:16 AM

I am going to cast my vote for Mariah Carey. I am not sure how Madonna or Kelly Clarkson and folks like that got brought into this choice, but to make a choice on who is more talented - Mariah Carey or Jennifer Lopez - I would say that vocally I like to hear Mariah Carey sing. I am not going to hate on Jennifer Lopez or Madonna or Kelly Clarkson - clearly they are all talented in their own way and each has a loyal fan base and each are doing their thing, but I think Mariah has a great voice, even still today when everyone is saying she has lost it - I totally disagree. You still hear the power come out in each song - she is just singing in a different style - changing up her a sound. Nothing wrong with that. MIMI was a great album this year - I still listen to it in my car. Just my opinion.

Lance | Dec 19, 2005 10:19:17 AM

sorry I had to comment again or I wouldn't be able to go through my day. Who ever came up with this poll should be put on death row LOL. A piece of advise for our girl J.Ho…. please stick with wrecking homes and getting married and leave singing and acting for talented people. And u that came up with this poll... try doing stand up u have great talent to be a comedian.

Mario | Dec 19, 2005 9:59:44 AM

I would have voted for Mariah over J.Lo even smack dab in the middle of the 'Glitter' era. No matter what sort of personal/professional troubles Mariah has gone through in the past you still can't ignore the fact that she's always written, produced AND sang the hell out of her 16 #1's. :) J.Lo doesn't write. J.Lo doesn't produce. J.Lo doesn't even sing. Thanks.

Amy | Dec 19, 2005 9:59:19 AM

ARE U GUYS SERIOUS ?????????????????? THIS IS VERY DISTURBING !!!, MARIAH AND J.HO IN THE SAME SENTENCE WHEN IT COMES TO TALENT ? Buhahahaha The Joke of the century. People it sounds like EW ran out of Polls. It would have been more challenging if u had compare J.Ho with Britney or Hilary Duff. Please when we are talking about true talent and beauty lets leave Mariah on the highest pedestal where she belongs and the rest might follow way behind her. Celine and Whitney are also very talented but ummm… yeah Mariah is definitely more talented any day! like I said she is all on her own. No comparison nobody can stand next to her and never will. Ohh Glitter…. The soundtrack and the Movie ? LOVED IT !! got both DVD and CD and Glitter is still in my CD player. Mariah just do your thing like u always did. Lets make “Don’t Forget About Us” her 17th #1 ! and lets watch Mariah take all those Grammys home !

Mario | Dec 19, 2005 9:15:09 AM

I'm always on Mariah's team no matter what i am behind her 100% with support and lots of love from all her fans out there! Mariah has been around more longer in her career than J.HO! J.HO needs to find a different path and not mix with the music career she belongs in! I'd much rather be on Mariah's side because I'm a huge Fan myself i've gone to every concert tour since she started her career! i love her music and her voice is oh my god soooo damn amazing! i enjoy every bit of her music its soo beautiful i give her 100% extra credit for all the songs she wrote herself! i bet j.ho had someone write the songs for her since she cant write! ha! Mariah can she has lots of talent to challenge other artist but she is still the #1 female artist of her whole career! YOU GO GIRL!!! GO MARIAH!!!!!

Michael | Dec 19, 2005 9:14:22 AM

The question clearly stated that "Mariah vs. J. Lo: Whose team are you on?" If you did not pick Mariah or J-Lo, some people must have a reading comprehension problem! We are not talking about Madonna!!!! We are talking about Mariah and J-Lo!

Taz | Dec 19, 2005 9:10:07 AM

No you didn't, Entertainment Weekly. There is no comparison between Mariah and J-Lo. There is only one talented diva, Mariah Carey! MC is talented, whereas J-LO is not so talented.

Taz | Dec 19, 2005 9:04:31 AM

Ive got more respect for Mariah, she works hard and writes her own music. J.LO just sits at home thinking who she is going to get married to next while someone writes all her music for her.

Darren | Dec 19, 2005 8:52:01 AM

Actually...who can compare a piece of ASS with REAL TALENT? There's no contest. Mariah is the BEST ARTIST EVER! J.Ho is just a fake wannabe artist ...J.Ho you can keep doin' your little back dance with Janet...LOSER!

Rolbert | Dec 19, 2005 8:27:41 AM

Mariah Mariah Mariah Mariah Mariah! We love her! She's amazing!! and beautiful of course:-D

Minou | Dec 19, 2005 7:45:39 AM

I've been a Mariah Carey fan since 1990 when she realised her first album. I've been supporting her since day one, and to see her bigger and so awesome then ever just proves that Mariah is here to say forever. Thanks to the fans for your support, our diva is back-actually she never went anywhere-for the record I think Glitter was an awesome soundtrack and some of her best music, this girl can sing! We've got to hand it to Mariah-BABE you are the best.JLO-honey its ok, keep to what you good at-selling perfume!lol.

Have a wonderful Christmas all of you
God Bless

Barrington | Dec 19, 2005 4:55:03 AM

This is a pretty funny question...i wouldnt even put their names in the same sentence...MARIAH is true talent...j.HO is well nothing but an actress trying to make money by talking cute with some music playing behind her...Mariah needs not to prove anything the facts and awards speak for them selves...J.ho would and will never nor will anyone else accomplish what mariah has...this year and every year will truely belong to Mariah as she has always ruled the music biz!

Robert | Dec 19, 2005 4:29:46 AM

okay lets just say that there is no comparison in this situation. mariah set the standard for everything jlo is today. jlo would be nothing if there was no mariah carey. every thing jlo does is a copy of say ummm a little record called fantasy. every body knows jlo can dance and some what act...whatever but no matter how hard jlo tries in her career, her talent will never rise above what mariah can do. pop music today wouldnt be the same with out mariah. she wanted to change the game and she did. jlo is just a follower.

Javier | Dec 19, 2005 4:28:20 AM

Mariah carey had more success in 2005, so ill pick her. I enjoyed her new album and the song 'fly like a bird' is a favorite in our church

erna | Dec 19, 2005 3:54:49 AM

J.Lo WHO????? does she exist?????

jeremy | Dec 19, 2005 3:45:07 AM

Well since this is a question of talent - only one can be considered. And that would be Mariah. If this was a dance competition however we may have a different situation. Just remember: The wrong will fail, and the good prevail - keep it up Mimi !

Mike | Dec 19, 2005 2:55:39 AM

no peeps. this is not a dumb question. this is a question thrown at J.Lo on why she's in the same sentence with Mariah while the latter already ranks with Elvis, The Beatles, Streisand, and the former is with controversial Glow, ridiculous Gigli, primadonnas, news on tune- and song-stealing...very amusing

No competition. i bet we'll see Mariah's new formula in the form of The Emancipation of J.Lo in the future just to grab media's attention again from that 'other' camp. come on, Mimi's talented. Let's leave the 'other' girl to the talentless pool of wannabes

toffer g. | Dec 19, 2005 2:53:29 AM

This question is ridiculous!! ROARRR!! Off course it's Mariah. What and who is J-Lo anyway? A singer? NO! An actress? Hell-NO! A songwriter? If you count Baby I Love you as a song... NO! PLUS: Mariah has the greatest body and eyes in music!!

Mariah rocks... But it's easy being compared with J-Lo. Alanis or Bjork could have formed somewhat more pressure on this poll!!
